Facilities
The main Lodge building is designed farmhouse-style with a kitchen equipped with both gas and electrical cooking facilities, including a large oven. Everything is available for self catering, from cutlery to glassware and cooking utensils; coffee and tea are complimentary. The comfortable lounge has DSTV, a large fireplace for those cold evenings and easy-living settees and arm chairs. Dining tables and chairs are provided inside as well as outside on the verandah for those balmier days. There is also a DMX piped music system in all public areas.
On the north side of the lodge is the barbeque and outside living area. This is a large covered ‘lapa’ (80 square metres) equipped with a huge barbeque fireplace on one side and a 4 station gas cooking area on the other. The latter was recently installed to provide al fresco cooking and dining facilities for the warm summer months; roll down screens protect this area from unexpected rain and wind. There is even an outside scullery adjoining the lapa creating an additional dishwashing area to avoid overcrowding the lodge kitchen. And that’s not all - there are more comfortable arm chairs and couches, tables and benches and a pool table, creating an exceptional entertainment area for all.
The whole of the lodge and its grounds was re-vamped in the early part of 2010 with particular attention to electricity compliance, borehole and water distribution, health and safety and strong moves towards eco friendly systems. To this end the following have been installed:
• Phase 1 of a solar water heating system, involving four solar geysers and panels.
• A detergent free laundry and water recycling system.
• All light bulbs have been converted to the ‘low energy’ type.
• The lodge borehole water was subjected to a microbiological test and given 100% clearance; comment “good enough to bottle and sell.”
For those ‘Eskom Moments’ when the village could be without power, the lodge has its own diesel generator system which supplies sufficient power for the borehole and water distribution system, plus laundry and a reasonable number of lights. Candles and head torches are available as supplementary lighting.
The lodge does not have a pub from choice but there is an 'honesty fridge' in the lapa supplying a variety of drinks.Group tours and hikers are welcome. Bookings for adventure activities and the Baz Bus are also available at the lodge.
Finally, there is a fire protection system in the form of smoke detectors in all rooms coupled to a siren and fire response system. Needless to say smoking is not permitted inside the buildings. The premises and grounds are fully secured.
